Core Keeper Fishing Guide: Start with the Minigame Disabled

The quick answer

With the fishing minigame disabled, craft a Tin Fishing Rod at the Tin Workbench, select it beside water, hold and release Use to cast, then press Use when the yellow “!” bite indicator appears. Check fishing power and water type if you are missing a target.

Fishing minigame disabled. Enabled-minigame reeling rules are outside this walkthrough; use your own control bindings.

Start with the setting this guide covers

This walkthrough covers the fishing minigame disabled. With the minigame enabled, reeling involves additional inputs that are not explained here; one button press is not a complete description for that setting.

Craft a Tin Fishing Rod at the Tin Workbench and place it on your hotbar.

Cast and reel

  1. Stand beside water and select the rod.
  2. Hold Use to choose the casting distance.
  3. Release Use to cast into the water.
  4. Wait for the yellow ! bite indicator, then press Use to reel in.

Follow your Controls for the actual input binding. Receiving a fish or another item completes a catch.

When you are not catching the target

Check fishing power against the water’s requirement, then the water type, then the biome for ordinary water. Also check whether the catches are only junk.

The reviewed reference gives water type priority in the catch pool, with the biome also affecting ordinary water. The number of connected water tiles by itself is not the deciding factor.

Cast into a bubbling fish spot to obtain fish rather than miscellaneous items. That does not guarantee one particular rare species. More fishing power can help efficiency; off-hand bait changes chances and speed.
